Common questions

What is the NIE?

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the personal identification number Spain gives to foreigners. You need it for almost any legal or financial step in Spain, such as buying property, signing at a notary, paying taxes or opening a bank account.

Do I have to travel to Spain to get my NIE?

Not always. Depending on your case, the application can be made at a Spanish consulate in your country or by a representative in Spain with a power of attorney. We will tell you which route fits your situation.

Is the NIE the same as a residence card?

No. The NIE is a number. It does not give you the right to live or work in Spain. Residence is a separate permit, with its own card (TIE).

How long does it take?

It depends mainly on the availability of appointments at the police office or consulate, which varies by city and time of year. When you contact us we give you a realistic estimate for your case.
